ACoRN Education Program

Did you know that every year in Canada:
  • Approximately 10% of all newborns require bag mask ventilation or more extensive resuscitation to assist in transition to extrauterine life.
  • Up to 15 % of these newborns are admitted to Neonatal Intensive Care Units.
  • At least 70% of these neonates are resuscitated outside a tertiary centre. 

The ACoRN Education Program’s emphasis is on teaching a systematic approach to the identification and management of babies who are at risk and/or become unwell in the first few hours or days after birth.

The process, tools, knowledge and skills required are designed to be useful regardless of a condition’s complexity or how frequently a practitioner is called upon to manage specific conditions.

  • Process: The priority-based, clinically oriented ACoRN process is based on an 8-step framework to help the practitioner systematically gather information, establish priorities and intervene appropriately.
  • Tools: The laminated Primary Survey and eight Sequences, Respiratory Score and Neonatal assessment tool are some of the clinical tools developed for the ACoRN Education Program.
  • Knowledge:  Core content specific to the ACoRN sequences.
  • Skills:  Practical and technical information about required skills.​
