The Hospital Paediatrics Section established the Distinguished Hospital Paediatrician Award to recognize excellence in clinical work, leadership, advocacy, research/innovation and/or medical education. The paediatrician receiving it has made a significant contribution to the field in Canada.
The award is presented during the CPS Annual Conference.
Awarded every other year, the next award will be presented in 2027.
Dr. Jeremy Friedman is receiving the first-ever CPS Distinguished Hospital Paediatrician Award in recognition of his stellar contributions to clinical care, education, scholarship and advocacy. Dr. Friedman’s primary interests over 35 years have been the clinical care of hospitalized children, caring for children with medical complexity, and quality improvement. He has advanced the field of hospital medicine in all three areas in Canada and beyond, and is a recognized leader internationally for developing inpatient care models and management protocols.
Dr. Friedman came to Canada in 1987 to escape apartheid-era South Africa, where he received his medical training. He worked for 3 years as a general practitioner in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, then trained in paediatrics at SickKids Hospital, Toronto, where he was chosen to be Chief Resident and came on staff in 1994. SickKids and the University of Toronto have been his ‘work-bases’ ever since, though Dr. Friedman’s influence on programs across Canada and abroad has been formative. He has published extensively and received numerous prestigious medical and teaching awards. Dr. Friedman is a universal favourite with patients, students, residents and fellows for his exceptionally centred and sensitive teamwork, teaching and patient care.
